4 Classic Signs You Have Poor Posture

Poor posture has been linked to many neuromusculoskeletal conditions that I commonly treat as a chiropractor. These conditions include headaches, low back pain, hip pain, and neck/shoulder pain. Below are 4 noticeable signs that you suffer from poor posture, all of which you can observe by looking into the mirror.

  1. Uneven Shoulders – Look into the mirror (either with your shirt off or in something that shows your shoulders) and notice if one shoulder sits higher than the other. Uneven shoulders are usually accompanied by pain and tension across the shoulders and the lower neck. Investigating further, uneven shoulders can be a sign of more chronic conditions such as recurrent migraines, scoliosis, and after prolonged periods, degenerative disc disease of the spine.
  2. Foot Flare – Another easily observed posture problem can be identified by looking at the angle of your feet while you stand. To make sure you get a true reading, you should walk in place with your eyes closed, stop, and then open them. If one foot is angled wider than the other, you could have a problem with your hips. Hips can be twisted inwards or outwards, and these asymmetries usually result in pain in the foot, knee, and of course, hips. If left untreated, this can predispose you to arthritis, ligament and muscle dysfunction, which can also lead to low back pain.
  3. Uneven hips – Place your fingers on the hip bones where your pants usually sit. Is one finger/hand higher than the other when you look into the mirror? If so, similar to uneven shoulders, it can create muscle tension and strain. This results in hip pain, low back pain, and unnecessary stress on the knees and ankles. Long term implications of uneven hips are arthritis and scoliosis.
  4. Jutted out stomach or chin – Having a chin and stomach that are jutted forward is a classic and common sign of poor posture. It usually means you have poor core muscle tone. While some of you may not care if you have a particularly strong muscular core, you will not appreciate the posture stress and pain in the neck, shoulders, hips, and low back. It also puts pressure onto the spine in the lower neck and back, which can lead to nerve pinching, radiating pain into the arms and legs, and numbness and tingling along the nerve pathways.
